Job Title:                PR and Social Media Assistant


Department:          Marketing


Reports to:             Director of Marketing and Communications


Status:                   Part-time, non-exempt


Summary Job Description:  Executes SJMA’s social media strategy, supports the director of marketing and communications and marketing department, and supports SJMA’s public relations, and community outreach activities.



  • Implementing social media communications in keeping with the Museum’s overall social media plan; planning, creating, and developing social media content
  • Maintaining and researching the Museum’s press lists; updating online events calendars and other websites with Museum’s information
  • Writing and distributing press releases on Museum’s public programs as assigned; serving as a point of contact for media requests, and greeting journalists onsite
  • Pursuing community outreach opportunities, including representing the Museum at local trade shows, fairs, farmers markets, and business and community events and meetings
  • Distributing Museum’s marketing collateral (posters, postcards, etc.)
  • Copywriting for print and digital media as assigned
  • Tracking of various marketing and communications metrics, including attendance, visitor surveys, audience research, and media reports.
  • Assisting in the organization of marketing events, including press previews and after-hours programs
  • Providing administrative support to the director of marketing and the three-person marketing and communications team
  • Other duties as assigned



Minimum Qualifications

  • B.A. in communications, creative writing, journalism, or related field
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in communications, social media, marketing, public relations, or related field
  • Familiarity and experience with social media and online communications
  • Excellent writing ability
  • Organization and attention to detail
  • Comfort and facility with person-to-person interaction
  • Face-to-face communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with deadlines
  • Experience with a wide range of software and web-based tools, and a demonstrated ability to keep abreast of, learn, and adapt to new technology and communications tools
  • Spanish, Vietnamese, or Mandarin language skills a plus

Special Requirements: Flexible schedule; some nights and weekends required.
