Full-time, Non-Exempt, Curatorial

Hiring Pay Scale: $55,000 - $65,000/ per year

The Norton Simon Museum is known around the world as one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled. Over a thirty-year period, industrialist Norton Simon (1907–1993) amassed an exquisite collection of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century and South and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years. Approximately 1,000 works from the permanent collection of 12,000 objects are on view in the Norton Simon Museum’s galleries and sculpture garden throughout the year.

The Museum is located in beautiful Pasadena, California, just steps from the bustling Old Pasadena district known for its shops and restaurants, and adjacent to the vibrant neighborhoods of northeast Los Angeles, Glendale and South Pasadena. Summary

Reporting to the Head of Conversation and Installations, the Exhibitions and Collections Coordinator oversees the installation of objects in the galleries, coordinates the preparators’ activities, and manages various projects related to conservation, exhibition, storage, packing and handling of the collections. The position provides administrative support to the Head of Conservation and Installations and coordinates budgets and vendor services for both the Curatorial and Facilities Departments.

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent judgment, attention to detail, and organizational abilities, as well as strong communication, interpersonal, time management, writing and computer skills.  This position must be able to communicate professionally and effectively with staff from all organizational levels.

College degree is required; a BA, BS, or BFA is preferred.  Experience with project management and three-dimensional modeling software is highly desirable.

A valid California driver’s license and personal automobile insurance are required. 

 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate all aspects of the installation of objects in the permanent collection galleries and temporary exhibitions under the direction of the Head of Conservation and Installations
  • Track work order approvals and prioritize and schedule their execution by the preparations staff
  • Work with Curators, exhibition design consultants and the Head of Conservation and Installations to develop layouts and installation plans for the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions and special displays
  • Assist with the supervision of preparation staff in receiving, unpacking, and crating works of art
  • Purchase and inventory materials, tools, equipment and supplies related to conservation, preparation, facilities and engineering projects and tasks
  • Communicate with project-related consultants and vendors under the direction of the Head of Conservation and Installations, including assistance with leading job walks and the review of submittals
  • Coordinate and process contracts, change orders, purchase orders, check requests, treatment proposals, condition reports, and treatment reports

 

Physical Requirements

This position is primarily in an indoor office setting, with frequent use of office equipment including computer, keyboard, and mouse. May involve long periods of sitting and standing. At times work is performed in storage and gallery settings. Must be able to bend, twist, reach, and lift up to 35 pounds.

 

Schedule

This is a full-time, non-exempt position scheduled to work on-site from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, and includes excellent benefits, including medical, dental, vision and life insurance and a generous pension program.
